Lactarius mutabilis Pk. Cap 3-8cm across, at first almost round, then convex and often slightly depressed, then expanded; dark brown or walnut brown in concentric bands and zones when wet; slightly sticky, but soon dry and smooth or with a very faint bloom. Gills adnate or subdecurrent, close, narrow to medium broad; whitish tinged yellowish or stained dingy red. Stem 30-80 x 6-l0mm, stuffed; same color as the cap, with the top paler; smooth, dry. Flesh thick on the disc, thinner at the edge; same color as the cap. Latex white or watery white, unchanging, sometimes staining gills pinkish. Odor normal or faintly aromatic. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, warty, 8-9.1 x 6.4-7.7µ. Deposit whitish to yellowish. Habitat on soil in coniferous and mixed woods. Found in eastern North America. Season June-September. Edibility not known - avoid.
